The causes of acne
Acne is multifactorial. It results from the combination of several mechanisms:
Excess sebum
The sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, creating an environment conducive to blemishes.
Hyperkeratinization
The pores become clogged due to disrupted cell renewal.
Bacterial proliferation
The bacterium Cutibacterium acnes (formerly P. acnes ) develops in clogged pores.
Inflammation: The immune system reacts, resulting in redness, pain, and lesions.
The different forms of acne
Acne does not manifest itself uniformly:
- Comedones : blackheads and whiteheads
- Papules : inflamed red bumps
- Pustules : pimples containing pus
- Nodules/cysts : deep and painful forms
The severity varies from mild to severe, with a significant aesthetic and psychological impact.
STAGES OF ACNE PIMPLE DEVELOPMENT
The different forms of acne
Sebum is secreted by the sebaceous gland. It protects the skin against dryness and acidifies it to control bacteria (normal skin).
Hormonal changes and/or dry skin induce an overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous gland. Keratinocytes (skin cells) multiply more rapidly.
The pore becomes clogged either by a change in sebum (blackhead) or by cellular obstruction (whitehead). This is the mild stage of acne.
The different forms of acne
The P. acnes bacteria present on the skin sometimes penetrates or is present within the pore. P. acnes can develop in the presence of sebum, inducing an inflammatory process (moderate acne) and subsequently a possible infection.
The infection develops and spreads to surrounding tissues. The pimple becomes infected and turns into a pustule or a nodule (severe acne).
Factors influencing the development of pimples
- Hormonal changes (adolescence, puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, stress...) → increase sebum production
- Excess calcium (chocolate, milk, dairy products... → use of zinc). Omega-3 deficiency. Zinc and Omega-3 help control inflammation.
- Hygiene products and cosmetics dry out the skin → overproduction of sebum as a reaction.
- Hygiene that does not control cutaneous P. acnes → penetration into the pores.
- Use of pore-clogging cosmetics → blackheads.
- Certain medications (hormones, corticosteroids...) → overproduction of sebum.
Thanks to lactoferrin and its other ingredients, the Zactigis SkinLine range is designed to support the control of the various factors involved in acne at all levels.
